Sundance Film Festival Preview
Directors discuss their films slated to debut at a Sundance that will be larely complemented by a mix of screenings via partnerships with independent cinemas and cultural organizations throughout the U.S. The Festival runs January 28-February 3. Among the filmmakers sharing their insights are:
--Pedro Kos premieres Rebel Hearts in the U.S. Documentary competition. The feature doc. centers on a group of pioneering nuns who have reshaped society with courageous acts of defiance--from marching in Selma in 1965 to the Women's March in 2018.
--Two-time Oscar nominee Lucy Walker returns to Sundance with Bring Your Own Brigade, which debuts in the festival's Documentary Premieres category. Walker's past Sundance exploits include winning the Audience Award in the World Cinema-Documentary competition for Waste Land, and the Non-Fiction Short Film Jury Prize for The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom.

SHOOT's Annual "Road to Oscar" 16-Part Weekly Series kicked off on 12/18 with a special preview feature followed by Part I on 1/1. The Series continues, weekly, every Friday through the Academy Awards. We connect with Oscar contenders spanning directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, composers, sound designers, production designers and more during an awards season that’s shaping up like no other.
Among those profiled in this installment are:
--Lee Isaac Chung, writer-dirctor of Minari (A24), which won both the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

--Alan Baumgarten, an Oscar-nominated editor for American Hustle in 2014, is now again in the awards season conversation for his cutting of Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Netflix)
--Jamie Walker McCall, production designer on director Ryan Murphy's The Prom (Netflix)
SHOOTelevision: Now Playing (Streaming) At A "Theater" Very Near You
Streaming TV and first-run features have meshed together as never before due to the pandemic. A look at HBO Max’s schedule in January which includes The Little Things directed by John Lee Hancock and starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto--scheduled to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max the same day (1/29). This marks the beginning to a new year in which Warner Bros.’ simultaneous streaming TV/theater distribution model will take hold, on the heels of the Xmas weekend rollout of Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max. In that vein, a look at other work from feature filmmakers that has as of late received critical acclaim playing for a primarily streaming audience, including David Fincher’s Mank (Netflix), Sofia Coppola’s On The Rocks (Apple TV+) and Steve McQueen’s Small Axe (Amazon Prime). And in the offing is director Lee Daniels' The United States vs. Billie Holiday, for which Hulu recently acquired U.S. distribution rights.
