What is the SHOOT New Directors Search
& the SHOOT New Directors Showcase Event?

It all starts with the annual New Directors Search that takes place from April-June; during the entry period directors who have been directing professionally less than 3 years can enter any type of advertising or entertainment work completed within the previous 15 months.  SHOOT selects the best 30 pieces of work that becomes the New Directors Showcase.
The SHOOT New Directors Showcase Event then brings the NDS Directors Face-to-Face with the Industry with the in-person NDS event, NDS website, NDS Issue and NDS meet the NDS Class email alert.  Being a Sponsor will put your company right in the middle of all the excitement before, during and for a full year after the Event!

SHOOT's New Directors Showcase shines a bright light on up-and-coming directorial talent and has identified many leading artisans over the years, who have gone on to win or be nominated for the DGA Award, garner Oscar and Emmy nominations, take Gold Lions and earn Grand Prix distinction at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity, and score AICP Show honors, among accolades at assorted other award competitions and film festivals. And, NDS Showcase inclusion has helped numerous directors gain production house affiliations.

Last year Russ' film "Ayar" debuted at the SXSW Film Festival as part of its Visions program recognizing risk-taking filmmakers in the new cinema landscape. Russ is handled by Tool of NA for commercials & branded content.

Michael Fiore Erik Sharkey, 2016 14th Annual NDS, based on their “Floyd Norman: An Animated Life,” saw that documentary win the Audience Award at the Bentonville Film Festival & the Judges Choice Award for Best Documentary at the San Diego Comic-Con Intl Independent Film Fest. Pioneering animator & artist Norman was the first African American to be hired by Walt Disney’s legendary animation department back in 1956. He moved up the ranks at the studio and became one of only a dozen artists over the years hand-picked by Walt Disney to work alongside him in the story department.

Romina Schwedler, 2014 12th Annual NDS alum, scored on the 2018 festival circuit as her short film, the psychological drama “The Visit”--starring Sean Maher and June Squibb (a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Nebraska”)--won the Millie Award for Best Director at The Milledgeville + Eatonton Film Festival. 2010 8th Annual New Directors Showcase alum Hiro Murai is now a five-time Emmy Award nominee. His last two nominations came this year as episodes of "Atlanta" and "Station Eleven" put him in the running for best directing in a comedy and drama series, respectively. As an EP on "Atlanta," Murai received Emmy nods for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2017 and ‘18. In that latter year, he also garnered a comedy series directing nomination for an episode of "Atlanta." Murai--who has a first-look producing deal with FX Productions--is additionally a two-time DGA Award nominee, the first coming in 2019 for "Atlanta," and then earlier this year for the "Wheel of Fire" episode of "Station Eleven."

In 2010, Ross Katz won the DGA Award for outstanding achievement in movies for TV/miniseries on the strength of his HBO film "Taking Chance,"  which garnered him inclusion in SHOOT's 2009 7th Annual New Directors Showcase. "Taking Chance" also earned three Emmy nominations for Katz in 2009--for writing, directing and outstanding telefilm.  Katz then made his mark as a producer with two Best Picture Oscar nominations for "In the Bedroom" and "Lost in Translation." Katz is at the helm of Sui Generis Pictures which is active in feature films, TV and both short- and long-form documentaries.

Keith Bearden made the 2008 6th Annual New Directors Showcase.  Two years later he saw his feature film directing debut, "Meet Monica Velour," make its worldwide premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was one of just 14 films chosen for Tribeca's Encounters section, offering original movies that reflect pop culture and contemporary issues.

Another 2008 6th Annual Showcase helmer was Harold Einstein of Station who shortly thereafter saw three Crest toothpaste spots he directed for Saatchi NY earn a Gold Lion in the Campaign category at Cannes. Harold launched his own production company, Dummy.

Joseph Kosinski earned inclusion in our 3rd annual 2005 New Directors Showcase. He has since gone on to direct varied features, the first being "Tron: Legacy" which grossed over $400 million worldwide. Speaking of box office, Kosinski directed this year's sensation, "Top Gun: Maverick," which at last count was approaching $1.5 billion worldwide. Kosinski is now with Reset, the production company launched by David Fincher and Dave Morrison.

The 2005 3rd Annual New Directors Showcase also included director David Gray--at the time he was a noted agency creative who had signed with Hungry Man to pursue a full-time directing career. Two years later, while still at Hungry Man, David was at the DGA Awards ceremony in Los Angeles as a nominee for Best Commercial Director of 2006. Gray is now with Supply & Demand for commercialmaking and branded content.

SHOOT’s 2nd Annual New Directors Showcase in 2004 included Elliott Lester who has gone on to an accomplished career, including helming HBO’s telefilm “Nightingale,” a one-character drama starring David Oyelowo as Peter Snowden, an emotionally damaged war veteran whose life unravels before us.
