Leading Directors Profiles
SHOOT profiles major directors whose work spans feature film, TV, commercial and branded content. Many of these filmmakers have already made or appear poised to make their mark on the awards show circuit for their short and long-form fare.
Among those profiled will be:

  • Chinonye Chukwu whose Clemency (Neon) is in the Oscar conversation after winning the Grand Jury Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
  • Robert Eggers--who earned Best First Feature and Best Screenplay Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2017 for The Witch--reflects on his 2nd motion picture, The Lighthouse (A24), which made a major splash at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
  • Nisha Ganatra--a Golden Globe-winning and Emmy-nominated director for Transparent, here feature directorial debut Late Night (Amazon) scored impressively at Sundance--looks to bring a new female comedy perspective to the ad arena via Chelsea Pictures.
  • Marielle Heller adds to her track record of directing tour de force performances, directing Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Sony Pictures). Heller is also active in spots and branded content via production house Caviar.
  • Bong Joon Ho, writer-director of Parasite (Neon), this year's Palme d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • Dan Krauss (a two-time Oscar nominee for the doc. shorts The Death of Kevin Carter and Extremis) sheds light on his feature documentary 5B, which won the Cannes Entertainment Lions Grand Prix a month after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival.  The film from the Johnson & Johnson brand is named after San Francisco General Hospital's ward 5B which opened in 1983 as the first full-fledged hospital unit dedicated to treating people with AIDS. Krauss is with Saville Productions for spots and branded content.
  • Lulu Wang discusses her acclaimed film, The Farewell (A24), which sparked a bidding war earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Cinematographers & Cameras
Leading DPs take us behind-the-scenes on recent shoots and discuss the directors they worked with, their camera choices and more. Among those we will hear from are:

  • Natasha Braier, ASC, ADF discusses lensing the Alma Har'el-directed feature Honey Boy, which is making a major mark on the festival circuit.

Up-And-Coming Directors
The longstanding SHOOT tradition of searching out new talent continues with this feature interviewing a select group of emerging directors.  It's also a tradition not to announce the names of these directors until the issue is published - it's always worth the wait!
We can however provide a bit of tease about them; they are...

  • A directorial duo which made its feature filmmaking debut while securing its first production house roost for commercials and branded content.
  • A Short Subject Documentary Oscar winner who's breaking into the ad arena.
  • A DGA Award nominee in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports-Specials category makes his first foray into the spotmaking world.
  • An HBO late night series in-house director looks to break into ad comedy.
