Awards Season Preview: Guild Awards
The Guild awards season is on the horizon, among the marquee competitions being the DGA Awards and within that lurks a hot documentary race. We explore some of the documentaries generating buzz and the filmmakers behind them. Three first-time documentarians--Jessica Kingdon for Ascension (MTV Documentary Films), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson for Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised; (Searchlight Pictures/Hulu) and Todd Haynes for The Velvet Underground (Apple TV+)--are garnering much attention as are directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West for My Name is Pauli Murray (Amazon Studios). Additionally, SHOOT connects with documentarians Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin who discuss The Rescue (National Geographic Documentary Films), Liz Garbus for her reflections on Becoming Cousteau (National Geographic and Disney+), Orlando von Einsiedel who headed a collective of filmmakers worldwide to realize Convergence: Courage In A Crisis (Netflix) and Matthew Heineman who helmed The First Wave (National Geographic, Neon).
